Scholarships

The Society has two funds which are set aside to encourage chamber music in the area. The Gordon J. Kinney Award is a grant of $200 awarded by the Chamber Music Society to a person or group that has contributed significantly to the promotion of chamber music in Central Kentucky. In 1997, the award was given to Sara Lynn Reeves, who had promoted chamber music for the last 17 years at Lafayette High School and Jessie Clark Middle School. In 1998, the recipients were Kathryn Drydyk and Marsha Pendley, both teachers in the public school system. Three honorary awards were also given to Joe Beach, Joe Pival and Jean Pival for their many years of commitment and their contributions to chamber music. The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra has also received the award for use in its chamber music program.

The Music Camp Scholarship, established in 1996, is made possible by a memorial fund in the name of Dr. Ray Longyear. Two hundred fifty dollars is awarded to an outstanding high school or middle school music student with experience in playing chamber music, and goes toward the expenses of attending a summer chamber music camp. The first recipient of the award was Jocelyn Butler, then a tenth grade cello student at Henry Clay High School. She attended Encore School for Strings summer music camp in Hudson, Ohio sponsored by the Cleveland Institute of Music. Benjamin Nichols is the most recent recipient of this award, which he used to attend a chamber music camp.

If anyone is interested in making a tax deductible contribution to either the Kinney Award or the Chamber Music Camp Award, please indicate on your check and mail to Chamber Music Society, Box 12032, Lexington, KY 40579.
